Sanger, Frederick
   b. 1918, Rendcombe, Gloucestershire
   Biologist
Frederick Sanger is one of the foremost British scientists of the century. A molecular biologist, he won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1958 after working out the structure of insulin. Sanger spent his life at Cambridge, where he attempted to ascertain the nature of several substances vital for biological functioning, including enzymes, antibodies and hormones. In 1980 he won a second Nobel Prize for chemistry, with Walter Gilbert and Paul Berg, for determining the base sequences of nucleic acids. His work has been crucial for biologists attempting to manufacture genetic materials in the laboratory.
